‘Classical and ‘Modern’ Music – Are They Really So Different?

 In essence, ‘No!’

 The works we know as the classics, the work of composers such as Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Wagner and others beloved of so many, and the ‘difficult’ music of Schoenberg, Webern, Stockhausen, Boulez, the source of bewilderment for just as many, in fact, share a clear common heritage.

My article Pythagoras and the Music of The Future – Part II discusses this common heritage in relation to the development of melody and harmony in Western music over the last 800 years or so together with its relationship to the naturally occurring harmonic series. We start to see that the musical genres and styles which are so revered on the one hand and so reviled on the other, both arise from the same source and that there is in fact a continuity and connection between them which, although perhaps not so immediately audible, is nonetheless, present.
